When Life Unravels, Stability Matters Most.
Our partner, Oak City Cares, reached out to us this month, asking for assistance for a woman and her five children, who were displaced due to a fire in their home. The woman is disabled and works part-time. While she was able to secure Section 8 housing, she still needed assistance with the move-in fees.
Another woman experienced homelessness after the hotel where she was staying was condemned due to severe bed bug and roach infestation. She also lost most of her belongings due to the contamination. But the story doesn’t end there. During the transition, she missed several days of work and was terminated from her job. But talk about resilience! She is now employed at Amazon and with the support of her care coordinator, she was approved for a one-bedroom apartment with a private landlord. While she can afford her monthly rent, she needed help with her security deposit and first month’s rent.
Another single mom with two children needed assistance with move-in fees after she suffered a financial setback due to an extended medical leave. This funding will prevent continued housing instability for her and her family and allow them to move into their new apartment. With her salary, she can pay her rent and expenses each month.
Sometimes all it takes to set someone on the path to homelessness is an accident, an illness, a job loss or tragic circumstances beyond their control. For 90 percent of those we help, the biggest obstacle to securing stable housing is the move-in fees. With your help, we’ve been able to make a difference in these people’s lives.
