Sometimes the gap between housing stability and eviction is smaller than people think. For Garfield, it came down to two months of missed rent and two diagnoses that changed everything.

Congestive heart failure. A rare autoimmune disease. Back to back, both serious, both requiring time away from work he couldn’t afford to lose. While he recovered, rent fell behind. By the time he was back on his feet and earning again, the arrears had put his housing at risk.

Garfield wasn’t looking for a way out of his responsibility. He was looking for a way to catch up — help covering what illness had cost him so he could stay in his home and keep moving forward.

Through our partnership with @oakcitycares, the Cooper Charitable Foundation provided a $2,500 grant that cleared two months of past-due rent and prevented eviction. This is what housing stability support looks like in practice. Not a dramatic rescue — just the right help at the right moment.

We’re grateful to work alongside Oak City Cares to make moments like this possible.
